Light, Privacy and Glare Under Control

Well-planned motorized blinds and shades should control daylight, glare and privacy without adding another daily task. Based in Roseland and in business since 1992, Total Home Technologies designs, installs and programs motorized window coverings across Northern New Jersey for finished homes, renovations and new construction.

Lutron Sivoia is the lead line for wired whole-home projects, while QMotion provides strong battery-powered options for finished rooms where opening walls does not make sense. Fabric, opacity, mounting, power and control are selected for each window, whether the goal is preserving a view, darkening a bedroom, reducing glare or coordinating shades with lighting and home automation.

When Motorized Shades Stop Working Properly

Motorized shades can fall out of sync, stop partway, lose control from an app or keypad, or begin hanging unevenly. Our knowledgeable team repairs, adjusts, reprograms and takes over existing shade systems, including those installed by another company. We start by checking the motor, power, brackets, fabric and programming before recommending changes. Shades and components that still perform stay in place, while failed parts or damaged coverings are repaired or selectively replaced.

Common problems we correct

✓ Stops halfway or will not move
✓ Multiple windows no longer align
✓ App or keypad commands no longer respond
✓ Battery-powered units losing charge too quickly
✓ Fabric hanging unevenly or beginning to sag
✓ Unusual noise or slower movement
✓ Existing installations needing new schedules or integration

Why Homeowners Choose Motorized Blinds

Motorized window coverings solve everyday problems without adding more switches, cords or routines. The value is simple: better control of glare, privacy, hard-to-reach glass and sun exposure.

Simple Glare Control

Shades can lower when direct sun reaches a television, workspace or seating area, reducing glare without closing the room off or asking someone to adjust every window by hand.

Privacy When You Want It

Street-facing rooms can close together at dusk or with one command, giving the household privacy when it matters without a nightly walk from room to room and window to window.

Hard-to-Reach Windows Made Easy

Tall glass, clerestories, and two-story windows become practical every day when motorized shades handle openings that are awkward, high or difficult to reach without a ladder.

Protect Floors, Furnishings and Art

Scheduled shades can reduce direct sun on wood floors, rugs, furnishings, and artwork during the brightest hours, helping limit fading without keeping your space dark all day.

Smart Shades for the Way You Use Each Room

The right window covering starts with what the room needs from the glass. Some spaces need glare control without losing the view. Others need privacy, darkness, or a practical way to manage windows that are difficult to reach. Total Home Technologies matches the fabric, power, mounting and control to each opening, then coordinates the shades across the home when that makes sense.

Motorized roller and solar shades controlling glare in a luxury Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ living room.

Roller and Solar Shades

Roller shades are a clean choice for living rooms, kitchens, offices and other spaces where the window treatment should stay visually quiet. Solar fabrics reduce glare and direct sun while preserving more of the view, with different openness levels determining how much light and visibility remain.

✓ Sheer, solar and room-darkening fabrics
✓ Glare reduction without automatically losing the view
✓ Recessed pockets or clean surface-mounted hardware
✓ Individual windows or coordinated groups

Blackout and Layered Shades

Bedrooms, nurseries and media spaces often need more than simple glare control. Blackout shades can significantly darken the room for sleep or viewing, while a second sheer or solar layer keeps the same window useful during the day.

Each layer can operate independently, giving the room different levels of daylight, privacy and darkness without changing window treatments by hand.

✓ Blackout coverage for bedrooms and media rooms
✓ Sheer or solar layer for daytime use
✓ Independent control of multiple fabrics
✓ Scheduled privacy and room-darkening scenes

Great Rooms, Arches and Hard-to-Reach Glass

Two-story great rooms, clerestories, walls of glass and windows above stairways often go uncovered because manual shades are impractical. Motorization makes those openings usable every day instead of leaving them permanently open or closed.

Wide window groups can also be divided into coordinated sections so the shades move together and the finished installation remains visually balanced.

✓ Two-story and clerestory windows
✓ Large walls of glass
✓ Coordinated groups across wide openings
✓ Hardware concealed with fascia or recessed pockets

Wired or Battery Power

New construction and major renovations give us the opportunity to run low-voltage power to each opening before the walls close. That creates a clean foundation for larger whole-home shade systems and removes routine battery maintenance.

Finished rooms do not always require opening walls. QMotion battery-powered shades provide another path for spaces where new wiring would be disruptive, allowing existing homes to gain automation without turning the room into a construction project.

✓ Wired systems for new construction and renovations
✓ Battery-powered options for finished spaces
✓ Power strategy planned before ordering
✓ Expansion from one room to larger areas over time

Outdoor Shades for Porches and Patios

Low afternoon sun can make a covered patio, screened porch or pergola uncomfortable even when the temperature outside is right. Exterior motorized shades help reduce glare and add privacy while allowing the space to remain connected to the outdoors.

Screen Innovations and Draper provide options for larger exterior openings where indoor window treatments would not make sense.

✓ Covered patios and screened porches
✓ Pergolas and outdoor seating areas
✓ Reduced low-angle sun and glare
✓ Added privacy when outdoor spaces are in use

Keypads, Schedules and Scenes

The biggest advantage of motorization is not simply replacing a cord with a button. Shades can respond to the time of day, direct sun and the routines already happening throughout the home.

Lutron shades can share keypads and scenes with lighting. In Control4 or Savant homes, window coverings can also become part of larger routines for morning, privacy, entertaining, television or leaving the house.

✓ Keypad, remote and app control
✓ Morning and evening schedules
✓ Lighting and shade scenes from one command
✓ Integration with Control4, Savant and Lutron

How a Smart Shade Project Comes Together

A motorized shade system works best when the windows, fabrics, power and control are planned together before anything is ordered. The process keeps each decision clear from the first visit through final setup and support.

Discovery

We review the windows, room use, sun exposure and existing conditions. The visit also confirms whether wired power or battery shades make more sense for that room and project.

Design

You choose fabric, openness, color, and control. The plan defines the mount, power source, groups, keypads, remotes and schedules before any shade is ordered inside your home.

Motorized Blind Questions

What is the difference between motorized blinds and shades?
Blinds usually have slats that tilt, while shades are a continuous piece of fabric that rolls or folds. Most motorized projects use roller or solar shades, and many people call both blinds.

How long do the batteries last?
It depends on the motor, the size of the window and how often the shade moves. Expected battery life is reviewed during design, and the Help Desk can walk you through a change.

Inside mount or outside mount?

Inside mounts sit within the window frame for a clean look. Outside mounts cover the frame and block more light at the edges. Window depth and how dark the room should get decide it.

Can motors be added to the blinds I already have?

Sometimes, but most manual coverings are not built for it. A new motorized shade is usually the cleaner, more reliable answer.

Are motorized shades loud?
Motor sound varies by line and model. For bedrooms and media rooms, quieter motors are part of the selection.

How long does an order take?
Lead times vary by manufacturer and fabric. You get the timing for your order during design, before anything is ordered.
